ELIXIR – a revolution in early life nutrition – What do we need to know?

At UK Dairy Day last week Wynnstay launched the first in a category of Energised calf milk replacers: ELIXIR. Specifically formulated for optimal development, resilience to disease and improved longevity, ELIXIR is a revolution in early life nutrition.

ELIXIR provides calves on elevated feeding plans optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Developed with a unique blend of dairy proteins and encapsulated fats, which maximise efficiency and provide the calf the building blocks for enhanced growth and development, and is formulated have the closest osmolality to whole milk. ELIXIR is the perfect product to unlock calves’ potential.

What do we need to know?

There are four key areas that make ELIXIR different to other milk replacers:

  • Energy
  • Osmolality
  • Mineral content

Calf health at nutrition has developed massively over the last few years and as an industry it is great to keep ahead of the game and keep questioning the norm.

Energy

When formulating ELIXIR we took mother nature as a biological reference, resulting in a milk replacer that contains 10% more metabolisable energy compared to normal CMR. From experience, I have felt for a long time that energy is often the limiting factor when it comes to calf growth and performance, providing 25% oil in ELIXIR provides calves with that extra energy that will help to improve growth rates and improve overall appearance.

Osmolality

Osmolality referrers to the concentration of solute particles in a solution and is calculated by adding the concentrations of sugars and minerals in mOsm/kg of solvent. The more elevated levels of osmolality can damage the gut integrity, increase risk of abomasal bloat and exacerbate diarrhoea, in ELIXIR we have reduced the osmolality so that it is closer to whole milk and have adjusted the recommended feeding levels to 135g/L. I would not recommend feeding any milk replacer above 175g/L.

Mineral Content

In ELIXIR we have rebalanced the mineral content which not only helps reduce the osmolality but takes it back to mother nature by looking at what the calf requires in terms on minerals.

Wynnguard

Wynnguard is an exclusive health package which contains Mannan-Oligosaccharide (MOS), probiotic and prebiotic combinations that have been chosen to optimise rumen development, as well as help protect the lower gut and significantly increase average daily gains.

What about on farm?

The results we have seen on farm have been extremely positive. Calves look in great condition and have a great shine to their coat. From both of the trial farms (one dairy, one beef) both have seen average DLWG of over 1kg per day in calves to weaning. We expect this growth to continue into the calves’ post weaning and prepubertal life. Farmer feedback has been astounding with farmers commenting on how well the calves look, how great their appetite is and how content the calves appear to be.

ELIXIR is a revolution in early life nutrition and I truly believe it will have a huge impact on the way we rear calves in the future.
